In addition to acting
as a publishing house dedicated to education, inter-cultural dialogue and
civil society development, DarEmar also attempts to tackle
similar issues using the internet, which provides a more accessible and
affordable alternative to traditional publishing. The relative lack of
censorship on the Web is another welcome advantage and a benefit that no
independent Arab organization could afford to ignore these days.
DarEmar's current
publishing projects include:
1) The Tharwa Project:
With gracious funding from
Pax Christi Nederland, DarEmar is currently implementing
an important project on religious and ethnic minorities in the Arab World.
The project is meant to help shed some lights on the historical background
and current state of the Arab World's various minority groups, highlighting
their concerns as well as their contributions to the political, economic,
cultural and intellectual life of Arab societies...

twenties and thirties, and then again in the fifties and early sixties, and
has made quite an impact upon Arab cultural life. Documenting the rise and
decline of this current and the ongoing attempts at reviving it, is more
necessary today than ever before, considering the wave of fundamentalism
sweeping across the region and the fact that the generation of intellectuals
and scholars that have given birth to the contemporary Arab liberal current
is all too simply dying off with its legacy left in tatters. Helping in this
endeavor is the main thrust of the Arab Liberal Forum...

3) The Arab Virtual Education Initiative:
The Arab Virtual Education Initiative seeks to foster the creation of a more
humanist intellectual and educational literature, aimed at Arab children,
adolescents and young adults, that can serve as an alternative to the
existing nationalistic and fundamentalist discourse that is currently
dominating the Arab cultural and educational scene. The purpose is to create
an electronic outlet for liberal minded Arabs to express themselves and
communicate their ideals to the coming generations. As such, the AVEI is
quite similar in concept to the Arab Liberal Forum, but the difference lies
in its more educational focus and its target audience...
