The Tharwa Project
Enabling a more constructive dialogue over the issue of minorities rights in
the Arab World
Despite the prevailing impressions and stereotypes, the Arab World is far
from being a homogenous entity, and is actually made up of a dizzying array
of religions, sects and ethnic groups. Throughout history, each of these
groups has managed to pursue its own unique line of interaction with the
majority population on the one hand, and with other minority groups on the
other.
Still, and while some of these experiments seem to have afforded the groups
involved certain basic rights and privileges that were often respected by
the majority population, not to mention the governments and rulers
concerned, contact with the West, the birth of nationalism and the collapse
of the Ottoman Empire have created a situation whereby new formula for
peaceful coexistence and mutual acceptance need to be established.
The
current rise in Islamic extremism and the US intervention in Iraq have
combined to make the need for addressing minority issues even more urgent.
The
Tharwa Project, a DarEmar initiative implemented in
cooperation with
Pax Christi Nederland,
seeks to create a forum for addressing these issues and other similar
concerns pertaining to the relationship between the important concepts of
minority rights and democracy as the two main pillars of civil society. For
